Chinatowns around the World

Chinatowns were found when Chinese started to travel and settle down in foreign land. Chinatowns are sometimes designated areas for Chinese communities by the host country. The area started to have Chinese charteristics when building are built with some form of Chinese architectural, location for chinese festivals events and a high concentration of Chinese. One of the common feature of Chinatown is the archways at the entrances. Chinatowna is also the source of good chinese food and goods.

Singapore Chinatown The Majestic Theatre, Outram

The Chinatown was formed when the British Colonial Goverment desginated the area for Chinese settlement in the 1822 Master Town Plan. The area is now a tourist attraction and Chinese festive events are held annually.

Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown. The Chinatown area started to develop from the 1820s when Chinese merchants built residence and large number of Chinese came to work as miners in the nearby tin mines.

The Chinese population in Penang grew after the British took control of the island from 1786. As traade grew, more Chinese came to work as coolies or to trade. Overtime, the Chinatown was formed and expanded. This is one of the few Chinatown that is part of the World Heritage Site.

Bangkok Chinatown China Gate

Bangkok's Chinatown was founded in 1782 when King Taksin established the Thonburi Kingdom with the capital at Bangkok. King Taksin enlisted the Teochew Chinese to supply rice and food to the new capital and granted land for the Chinese community. It is one of the largest in the world.

The China Gate was built in 1999 to signify the chinese community's royalty to King Bhumibol of Thaiand.

Bangkok Chinatown Kuan Yim Shrine / Thian Fa Foundation

The foundation was founded by chinese immigrants in 1902 to give medical treatment to the poor. It has a Kuan Yim statue carved from teawood during the Song dynasty.

Japan Kobe Chinatown

Chinese developed the Chinatown after arriving in Kobe when the port was open to foreigners in 1868. It is known as Nanjing Town or Nankin-machi as most of the Chinese were from Nanjing City. It now has the largest Chinese community in Kansai region.
